Variable Speed Pool Pumps – The Future of Swimming Pools
By choosing the proper pump, Swimming pool owners can expect savings of at least $400/year.
Only the energy-concerned owners of swimming pools truly understand the high energy consumption of their own swimming pool. In fact, the pool pump is probably one of the largest energy using appliances they have in their house. That’s because most swimming pool pumps use very energy efficient single stage motors that run at 1HP and up. In the past, energy supply has been plentiful and energy conservation efforts have not been considered – a norm in the swimming pool industry.
My existing pool pump is using how much electricity? A recent study found that to power California’s 1.2 million pools demands roughly the same production as one nuclear power or two conventional energy plants (study by Davis Energy Group for Pacific Gas & Electric – 2004). Imagine the energy usage of ALL the swimming pools across the United States, and how this much impact our power conservation efforts. Arizona also has an incredible count of private swimming pools per house, which is why Phoenix pool contractors are switching to these incredible new pumps.
The solution? Pumps that work smarter, not harder.
In the past few years, the pool industry has seen some dramatic upgrades involving swimming pool pumps and motors. The newest in energy savings has come from the introduction of the revolutionary variable drive, variable speed pool and spa pump. Designed and manufactured to use less energy, these new pumps are using permanent magnetic motors. Permanent magnet motors (like those used in hybrid cars) provide a typical 30% base savings compared to induction motors. As the pool operator programs this pump to work at the minimum required capacity for each pool task (heating, cleaning, filtration, waterfalls, etc.) electricity reduction can be as much as 90%!
By operating a pool and spa pump at its slowest speed needed to complete a job, it will drastically slash the energy consumed (only because it takes less energy to move water slowly than rapidly). Did you know? On a typical pool and spa task, if a pump can reduce the speed by 1/2, then the power will be reduced to 1/8. Simply put, these new pumps allow the swimming pool owner to program and “dial in” the pump speed to achieve the minimum electricity use.
Energy Savings of $620 to $1,350
According to Pentair Pool and Spa, their IntelliFlo® and IntelliPro™ variable drive pumps routinely reduce energy use up to 90%, depending on the models and circumstances for average savings of $620 to $1,350 annually. Because the cost to replace your old pump is about equal to what you will save (based on pool usage over 1 to 2 years), many swimming pool owners are having their old pumps replaced.
Power delivery charges are even higher in Arizona, and with Phoenix’s huge pool and spa count, this new pump has become an absolute necessity for pool companies in Phoenix when designing new swimming pools. California’s movement to eco-friendly products makes switching to an electricity efficient pool pump even more necessary.
Specific Examples of how IntelliFlo pumps can be designed in your pool & spa:
First and foremost, this pool pump can be used for an in-ground cleaner system booster pump, and it’s set at 3050 Rev’s per minute, which is equivalent to a two horsepower pump. The same pool pump can be throttled down to a half HP pump to circulate & clean the water of the pool. With some simple computer technology, the same swimming pool pump can be used as a booster pump for the spa jets (imagine a slow speed therapy and a faster one – all from the same pool pump, and the push of a button!) Another great use is the ability to control the speed of a waterfall or swimming pool water feature (it is also known to be used by high end residential Phoenix landscape companies to control the sound & flow of detailed landscape waterfalls or waterfeatures). The IntelliFlo Pentair pump can be set for multiple speeds - giving you a low speed waterfall for a quiet evening outside on the patio, or you can turn the speed up for MAX PRESSURE for a backyard party!
