How to Organize Clutter
Filed under Home ImprovementMay 9Clutter can be a stumbling block for someone who wants a clean and organized house but doesn’t know how to get rid of the clutter. Often when a house becomes too cluttered it is really difficult to dust or vacuum because it takes so much time in trying to de-clutter to be able to actually clean. Typically you become too tired to keep cleaning after you finally get through all the stuff in the way. But the good news is there are things you can do to control and organize clutter BEFORE it becomes overwhelming.
It is the piles of paper around the house that clutters the home the most. Mail, work papers, children’s schoolwork, and mail are the common piles of paper found cluttering up the home. To avoid piles of paperwork cluttering up your home there are a few things you can do to organize yourself.
First let’s talk about what to do with your mail. Throw away the junk mail immediately each day when the mail comes and then go through it right away so it doesn’t pile up. Some people throw out the junk mail before they even come back into the house. Next create a “to do” file and put your bills that need to be paid in the file. Have a file folder in a desk or kitchen drawer labeled as your “to do” file or you can hang a basket by the main telephone. Instead of leaving papers on the counter to put away later you should file them away right away. Later NEVER seems to come and soon it becomes clutter.
It works the same way as the mail if you have to bring home work papers. File all your “to do’s” in one spot (not on the counter) and file away your important papers.
If you take the newspaper, some people have a bin under the kitchen counter next to their garbage can to place their newspapers and other recyclable papers in. After reading the newspaper dispose of it in the proper bin. Both the recyclable newspapers and the garbage can then be taken out at the same time for convenience.
Sometimes parents get caught up in keeping every little paper their child brings home from school. Then you could have large piles of schoolwork cluttering up the house. When you want to keep all your child’s school papers as keepsakes to go in their scrapbooks then it is hard to try to keep the clutter down to a minimum. You can solve this dilemma by keeping a plastic storage bin or box in a cabinet or closet nearby. Then as you decide which papers you want to keep you can put them in the bin in the closet instead of in a pile on a counter. Instead of keeping and storing the children’s large artwork and other projects take a picture of them for their scrapbooks and then throw them away. Get a larger bin as a permanent place you can transfer papers to from the nearby closet and keep it under a bed or a basement or attic if you have one. This way you can organize clutter and still keep those precious memories that you and your child can look through and remember one day.
Organizing clutter is more than going through piles of papers because there are items that clutter also and when it comes to those things you need to ask if it is something that you are going to use again and again? You have to be completely honest. If you have not used or needed an item for more than a year then you most likely do not need to keep it so get rid of it!You might consider giving your unused or unneeded articles to charity or you could have a garage sale to get fid of them. Only store an item that you are not sure about keeping for six months then if you haven’t needed it or used it in that amount of time throw it out.
For your seasonal items purchase some large storage containers that can be stacked on top of each other and put them in an attic, basement, or garage. Always mark you storage containers well so that you will know what is in each one. No one needs the aggravation of having to search though every box to find the decorations they want. So mark them and you will always know what each container has stored in it and can locate what you are looking for more easily. Remember to throw away any items you find that are broken, damaged, or stained.
It may take some time to organize clutter around your house at first, but once you have set up a system and routine it will so easy to keep up the things that come into your home. Now enjoy your clutter-free environment!
